Grassroots Renegade

Jools Watsham is a dude with a broken heel (do get well soon!). He’s also the owner and creative director of Dementium the Ward and Moon developers Renegade Kid. Three weeks ago, he posted a video titled “YOU CAN HELP!” on his YouTube vlog:

Check out some fresh (if diminutive) Dementium II screenshots and my take on the video after the jump!

Above, Watsham asks for the active participation of a whopping 100,000 viewers to join together in support of original titles for the Nintendo consoles. It turns out Renegade Kid have been shopping around for publishers to get backing for their latest two projects, Maximilian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds and the previously cancelled Son of the Dragon, but have received a rather lukewarm response due to the prevalent perception that funding original DS and Wii titles is risky compared to established IP and license-based games – a general reluctance that already drove a stake in the heart of the Son of the Dragon earlier this year.

In the video, he negotiates the issue:

“I keep up on games, gaming news and so on… and I go into the store, and I see these games on the shelf, and half of them I don’t recognize. They may be great, they may not be. That’s the problem. That’s why people gravitate towards known, familiar brands.”

To date, the video has accumulated some 4000 viewers. That’s not exactly one hundred thousand yet, but then again, as we all know anything can happen when gamers choose to unite for a common cause – too bad we gamers most often best mobilize behind boycotts and demonstrations, though! After you’ve checked out Jools’ video, you could also check out some Dementium II previews at Play Magazine and VideoGamer.com – the game is currently slated for a February 2010 release.
