Puffs of Steam

Stuff’s up in the Steam-hood:

Killing Floor, the newest zombie game on the block, is now priced at 17,99€, and is currently selling at a pre-purchase discount of 25%. The UT2k4 version of the ex-modification is still available.

Valve’s Robin Walker admits to Shacknews that the company is “exploring … RPG-style mechanics” with Team Fortress 2.

Left 4 Dead statistics are now available on your Steam community page.

…Valve sues Sierra On-Line in 2002 for unauthorized distribution, goes to US District court with Sierra/Vivendi, and finally battling the merged Activision Blizzard/Vivendi in 2009. Sins of the Fathers, huh?

These bullet-point lists probably won’t become a habit of ours (à la GamesRadar), but it’s worth a shot, eh!

The game’s writing team now includes “two ex-LucasArts game designers, Larry Ahren [sic] and Jesse Clark1)http://www.avampyrestory2.com/info.php; Ahern was last seen working on Insecticide (our review here) and Clark’s previous game seems to have been Outlaws back in 1997.

Merchants of Brooklyn Patched

Stop press!

This was to be the space for a review of Paleo Entertainment’s new game, Merchants of Brooklyn. In MOB, you play as Matteo, a cybernetically enhanced Neanderthal clone. Suffice to say, Matteo suffers a life-threatening dismemberment in combat but ends up being saved by a scientist who grafts him a new robotic arm to replace the lost one.

The problem? The game’s launch on Steam was unfortunately a miserable one, and Paleo Entertainment have now confirmed an alpha version of the game was uploaded to Steam at first: This meant the load game mechanism tended to break scripting and a degree of graphics settings were unavailable. Most importantly, however, the sound levels of the audio were such that players were completely unable to hear the game’s narration and thus follow the plot!

Go Matteo Go!
Go Matteo Go!

Luckily, Paleo Entertainment has jumped to the save instantaneously and a massive first-day patch, one that amounts to more than half the original size of the game (of 690mb), has already been released. So far, we’ve head reports that the menus have been improved (AA is now selectable), a difficulty setting has been added and the sound is now indeed correctly balanced.

When will Matteo be truly unshackled? While we wait for our patches to download and bugs to be fixed, you can read more about the game in our introductory post for the game.

Wallace & Gromit Demo

Telltale Games is letting us know the Wallace & Gromit Grand Adventures demo is now (exclusively, at the time of writing) available at Yahoo and FilePlanet. After an admittedly brief play-through, as the short demo is only really designed to acquaint new players with the generic mechanics of the adventure game genre, I still found myself surprised enough!
